Reforming Social Welfare in Germany: An Applied General Equilibrium Analysis
This paper analyses the effects of a social assistance reform in Germany. In contrast to studies which are based on microsimulation methods we use a computable general equilibrium model which incorporates a discrete choice model of labour supply to simulate a variety of reform scenarios. The main contribution is that we are able to identify general equilibrium effects of a reform on wages and unemployment. The simulation results show that general equilibrium wage reactions tend to mitigate labour supply effects. Moreover, the simulations indicate that substantial employment effects are to be expected only from major cuts in welfare payments. --social assistance,discrete labour supply model,applied general equilibrium
Preoperative Imaging of Charcot Neuroarthropathy in Diabetic Patients: Comparison of Ring PET, Hybrid PET, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction: The treatment of Charcot neuroarthropathy in the feet of diabetic patients has undergone fundamental changes in the last few years. Formerly, treatment was almost exclusively limited to nonoperative measures; since the late 1990s, however, current practice has shifted to early, stage-appropriate surgical therapy. The objective of this prospective study was to investigate the value of two types of positron emission tomography (PET) in the preoperative evaluation of diabetic patients with Charcot foot deformities. Materials and Methods: Ring 18FFDG (2-fluoro-2-deoxy-glucose) and hybrid PET were compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI, ring PET, and hybrid PET imaging were used as part of the preoperative evaluation of 16 patients with type II diabetes mellitus. The diagnosis of Charcot neuropathy of the foot requiring operative treatment had been made on the basis of clinical and radiographic criteria. Results: Of 39 Charcot lesions confirmed at surgery, 37 were detected by ring PET, 30 by hybrid PET, and 31 by MRI. Conclusions: PET (ring or hybrid) can be used in the evaluation of patients with metal implants that would compromise the accuracy of MRI. Another advantage of PET is its ability to distinguish between inflammatory and infectious soft-tissue lesions, and between osteomyelitis and Charcot neuroarthropathy. The differentiation between Charcot neuroarthropathy and florid osteomyelitis provides the surgeon with important additional information that often is unavailable from MRI. Because it provides important additional data, ring PET may be preferable to radiography and MRI in the preoperative evaluation of patients with Charcot neuroarthropathy of the foot. Hybrid PET, because of its poorer resolution compared to ring PET, appears less suitable for routine clinical application

Magnetic hysteresis effects in superconducting coplanar microwave resonators
We performed transmission spectroscopy experiments on coplanar half
wavelength niobium resonators at a temperature T=4.2 K. We observe not only a
strong dependence of the quality factor Q and the resonance frequency f_res on
an externally applied magnetic field but also on the magnetic history of our
resonators, i.e. on the spatial distribution of trapped Abrikosov vortices in
the device. We find these results to be valid for a broad range of frequencies
and angles between the resonator plane and the magnetic field direction as well
as for resonators with and without antidots near the edges of the center
conductor and the ground planes. In a detailed analysis we show, that
characteristic features of the experimental data can only be reproduced in
calculations, if a highly inhomogeneous rf-current density and a flux density
gradient with maxima at the edges of the superconductor is assumed. We
furthermore demonstrate, that the hysteretic behaviour of the resonator
properties can be used to considerably reduce the vortex induced losses and to
fine-tune the resonance frequency by the proper way of cycling to a desired
magnetic field
The Interplay of WNT and PPARγ Signaling in Vascular Calcification
Vascular calcification (VC), the ectopic deposition of calcium phosphate crystals in the vessel wall, is one of the primary contributors to cardiovascular death. The pathology of VC is determined by vascular topography, pre-existing diseases, and our genetic heritage. VC evolves from inflammation, mediated by macrophages, and from the osteochondrogenic transition of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) in the atherosclerotic plaque. This pathologic transition partly resembles endochondral ossification, involving the chronologically ordered activation of the β-catenin-independent and -dependent Wingless and Int-1 (WNT) pathways and the termination of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) signal transduction. Several atherosclerotic plaque studies confirmed the differential activity of PPARγ and the WNT signaling pathways in VC. Notably, the actively regulated β-catenin-dependent and -independent WNT signals increase the osteochondrogenic transformation of VSMC through the up-regulation of the osteochondrogenic transcription factors SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). In addition, we have reported studies showing that WNT signaling pathways may be antagonized by PPARγ activation via the expression of different families of WNT inhibitors and through its direct interaction with β-catenin. In this review, we summarize the existing knowledge on WNT and PPARγ signaling and their interplay during the osteochondrogenic differentiation of VSMC in VC. Finally, we discuss knowledge gaps on this interplay and its possible clinical impact
